The number of mobile phone users increases each and with increase comes a commensurate growth in the number of people who are connected to the internet. From the Americas to Africa, people are making their lives better with smartphones. Nowadays, we need the internet for virtually everything we do and we require it not only to be available but to be fast, super fast. To this end, late last year, several mobile network providers launched the 4G LTE network in Nigeria which is a welcome development to those who have access to it. While we are still chewing on 4G and the marvels it holds, something bigger and better is cooking- 5G.
Yup, you read that right, 5G (fifth generation mobile networks) is on the way. 5G comes with the promise of lower data costs, lower battery consumption (Amen!), lower latency than 4G and also a higher number of mobile broadband users per unit area. This technology will be of great use because not only our phones are connected any more but our cars, watches and even our homes. With IoT (Internet of Things) growing, the world will definitely need faster and cheaper data services to keep up.
This new 5G network will supposedly be 40 times faster than 4G (what????) and will allow users to instantly upload and download photos and videos on the internet. With 5G, you’ll be able to download files in the blink of an eye- that’s literally!!! (o2tvseries here I come). It is expected that this technology will be rolled out in 2020(😂 I don’t wanna wait for three years). Telecommunications providers across the world are embarking on a rat race and we cannot wait to see who launches first. Hopefully, the network providers in Nigeria are not just chopping our money but are planning on ways to deliver better data services. I don’t knowabout you but 5G, this gal awaits you.
